April 2008 Archives

Bring your bashful Bruce Wayne or unassuming Peter Parker out to mingle with the other heroes at McWane Science Center's Super Power Party on April 26th from 5 to 8 p.m.

The younger your household's resident super power, the more likely he or she is to forego the subtlety of a phone booth or underground cave and go straight for the glory of a costume.  Your own Violet Incredible will be right at home among other powerful party goers and some impressive super heroes brought in just for the occasion.

Tickets are $50 for adults and $25 for children ages 2 - 14, and the proceeds help fund McWane Science Center programs.  As you would expect, this venue will include entertainment that is both memorable and informative.

Chances are, if the post office is on your errand list, it is because you need to ship a package or purchase stamps.  Although the Postal Service website has several conveniences, you should know that an Automated Postal Center (APC) is always at your service.  Weigh and ship packages, buy stamps, and purchase package insurance and delivery confirmation service with the touch of a few buttons.  Swipe your credit or debit card and you’re done.

An automated “center” is essentially a self-service check out kiosk for postal customers.  The kiosks best accommodate soft packages or small/short boxes (the receptacle is about the size of a regular mail drop-box, so a large, stiff package will not fit).  A touch screen walks you through weighing your package, printing a metered stamp, paying and printing your receipt.  These are available 24 hours a day, so there is no need to spend time waiting in line and no reason to delay sending a care package on account of hassle.  Nothing could be easier.

Automated Postal Centers are available 24 hours a day at these locations:

Birmingham:                 Main P.O.  351 24th Street North , 35203

Cahaba Heights:          3105 Sunview Drive, 35243

Hoover:                          1809 Riverchase Drive, 35244

Meadowbrook:             1900 Corporate Drive, 35242

Stress Awareness Month

Tax Day.  Laundry. Deadline. Carpool.  Do we need to be reminded of the stress inherent in parenting and juggling all our roles?  Apparently, the month of April is designated for just such an assessment, and there are even greeting cards for the occasion (please don't send one).

We began the month with school closing early due to threatening weather.  In the midst of a fully scheduled day, the school closing notification arrived  and suddenly there were 30 minutes with which to scramble and get to the school for pick up. The practices, ballgames, and carefully orchestrated evening plans had to be unwound somehow, and that was to say nothing of the frightening weather conditions.

The 1,000 Family Garage Sale

BargainCarouselNewLogo.jpg

Right now, row upon row of furniture, sporting equipment, home decor and clothing are being sorted and priced at the former site of Belks in Century Plaza Mall.  The bustle of activity is in preparation for the Junior League of Birmingham's annual Bargain Carousel on Saturday, April 25th, and Sunday, April 26th.

Here's how it works:  Every active member of the Junior League of Birmingham - that's over 1,000 women - is required to contribute $100 of gently used merchandise for the sale.  Bargain Carousel is the single largest fundraiser for the League, with proceeds funding a variety of programs that benefit women and children in the Birmingham area.

Some of the best bargains are to be had in electronics and appliances, where members who have upgraded televisions or washing machines have donated their working original models.  The same is true for lamps, accessories, and furniture.  Some infant clothing still has original tags affixed, and a few merchants have donated overstocks of items like children's shoes or stationery, so in these cases the merchandise is brand new.  In other cases, used sporting equipment or children's toys still have plenty of utility left.

Bargain Carousel benefits the community by allowing shoppers to find bargains while their purchase price is reinvested in local projects.  Items find a new home in this circle (make that carousel) of usefulness.

Note:  There is a $5 admission charge from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, and items are half price on Sunday.

The Big Read in Birmingham

Communities all over the country are participating in a program sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts, The Big Read, an initiative designed to encourage reading for pleasure among Americans.

BirminghamMoms and Alabamians in general have a unique opportunity to participate in this cultural event, since one of the novels featured in The Big Read is To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.  Perhaps we take for granted the greatness of the story, set in segregated Alabama and recognized as an classic in American literature.  The book is required reading for most 9th graders in the city, and has been selected as The Big Read novel of choice for communities from Buffalo, NY, to Orange County, CA.

The culmination of The Big Read in Birmingham will include a showing of the movie at the Alabama Theater on Thursday, April 10th at 7 p.m. ($4 admission includes popcorn and a soft drink).  Other events at area public libraries are also scheduled. There are even overnight tours departing from Brookwood Mall that will include significant sites in Montgomery, Monroeville, and Selma, as well as a live performance of the stage production.  (Registration must be submitted by April 10th.)  If you can't go, look over the itinerary for inspiration on how to plan a short educational trip sometime.

$4 Generic Prescriptions

WalMart and Target are now offering  $4 generic drugs in the Birmingham market, and who better than BirminghamMoms to benefit from these programs.

If your young ones have had their share of ear infections, rashes, some asthma, and the usual winter crud, you will be happy to know that many of the drugs commonly used to treat these ailments are on the list.  Even certain prenatal multi vitamins and folic acid supplements are included.

The $4 price, which covers a 30-day supply of many generics in common doses, is actually less than some over the counter dosages (24 tablets of 200 MG Advil cost $4.19 at CVS online, while 30 tablets of  prescription-strength 800 MG Ibuprofen are included in the $4 program).

Despite concerns over rising health care costs, $4 generics are a bright spot.  It’s hard to complain in this case, when a necessary medication costs no more than a bottle of nail polish.
